What is Personal Growth?
The term personal growth has become a bit of a buzzword. Open any social media app, and you’ll find someone promising self-improvement and personal growth through different means. Some of this content is based on years of experience and hard work. Other posts may not have quite as much substance.
Is yoga just one more of those short-lived means for personal growth? We believe that it’s far more than that.
First of all, yogis and yoginis have used asanas, meditation, breathwork, and mindfulness practice for centuries to change how they relate to themselves and their environment.
Second, when you practice regularly, the subtle changes you’re making to your body and your mind begin to run deeper. Over time, your yoga practice can transform you permanently.
That is true and lasting personal growth which will benefit all aspects of your life.

How Can Yoga Support Your Personal Growth?
Every time you step on your mat or join an Uptown Yoga class, you have the opportunity to make small changes to how you think or relate to yourself and your overall outlook on life. You have a chance to reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a more positive and productive approach to daily challenges, large and small.
That is possible because yoga encourages self-reflection and helps you build a healthier connection with and between your body and your mind. Our physical practice can motivate us to nurture our bodies more and enjoy the range of movement we have while at the same time striving for deeper expressions of different asanas.
Mentally and emotionally, practicing yoga allows you to tune in to your breath and use it as a guide as you settle into your class or your own practice. You learn to recognize strong emotions and relate to them in a healthier way. For example, becoming more familiar with breathwork exercises can create an alternative to reaching for that chocolate bar or glass of wine when you start feeling overwhelmed.
When you practice regularly, you’ll gain mental clarity and start relating differently to yourself and the challenges you face daily. You’ll break free from limiting beliefs and grow your resilience. Your practice effectively gives you a grounding or a foundation for your body and your mind.

How Often Do I Need to Practice to Reap the Benefits?
Practicing consistently is the key to making yoga for personal growth work. However, that doesn’t mean you need to go from never having stepped on a mat to practicing every day.
Set yourself realistic and achievable goals by committing to two classes per week, for example. This will help you establish consistency without becoming overwhelming. If you need to miss a session, don’t worry. You haven’t failed in your commitment. Perhaps you can spare a few minutes at home or simply continue your yoga journey during the next class.
The more regularly you practice, the sooner you will see the changes in yourself and your outlook. Still, as with most things in yoga, there is no right or wrong path to self-improvement. Find your own pace and enjoy the results as you start to see them.

What Kind of Yoga Classes Should I Choose For Personal Growth?
Just as there is no set-in-stone path toward personal growth, there are no wrong classes you could choose to support your personal growth.
In our experience, you’ll see the most significant results when you combine your physical practice with mindfulness elements, explore meditation, and add breathwork to your routine.
Try one of our Flow + Stretch classes to benefit from physical challenges and stress relief. If that sounds too energetic, a Deep Stretch class will give you an opportunity to sink deeply into poses that are nourishing your body and your mind and help you release tension.
If you’re practicing at home, consider adding a few minutes of deep relaxation or breathwork to your routine to calm your mind before you start or at the end of your practice. You won’t regret it!
