Chakras: Delving Into the Subtle Body
When we practice yoga, we have an opportunity to connect the physical body with the subtle body – our energy, mental state, emotion. Linking breath to movement and moving with intention allows us to harness what we’re doing externally to create shifts internally.
Gaining a deeper understanding of these energetic shifts requires an understanding of the chakra system. The chakras have long been known as mystic centers of energy and a road map for the journey of spiritual awakening. These seven major energy centers in the body, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head, are said to generate behavioral patterns and beliefs.

What are Chakras?
If you have ever done the heavy lifting of examining your own emotional patterns—trying to understand why certain fears keep surfacing, why you struggle to speak your truth, or why you feel a sudden disconnect from your intuition—you are already interacting with your subtle body.
While traditional anatomy maps out our bones, muscles, and organs, the ancient chakra system maps out our energy. The word "chakra" translates to "wheel" or "disk," referring to seven main energy centers aligned from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Think of them as the precise intersections where your physical body meets your psychological state.
When these centers are open and flowing, we feel secure, creative, and emotionally regulated. But when they become blocked by stress, unexpressed emotions, or deeply ingrained behavioral patterns, those blockages manifest as physical tension and mental "dis-ease." Understanding your chakras isn't just about abstract spiritual concepts; it is a highly practical roadmap for identifying exactly where you are stuck so you can do the inner work to clear it.
Read on to explore how these seven energy centers shape your reality.
1. Root Chakra
This energetic center is responsible for your sense of grounding, security, and stability. It’s associated with the base of the spine and the pelvic floor. Blockages of the root chakra are related to anxiety, fear, and even nightmares.
2. Sacral Chakra
Located between the pubic bone and the navel, the sacral chakra is associated with creative and sexual energies. Individuals experiencing creative blocks, emotional instability, or even physical or sexual issues may have a blockage of the sacral chakra.
3. Solar Plexus Chakra
Associated with what many describe as your core, the solar plexus chakra is related to your sense of personal power. A blocked solar plexus chakra may manifest as low self-esteem, indecisiveness, or even anger and control issues.
4. Heart Chakra
We’ve all heard the term “heart space” used in class – your heart chakra is located exactly there, at the center of your chest, representative of where the physical and the spiritual meet. It’s associated with a sense of openness, vulnerability, and love – blockages here have a direct impact on those elements of life.
5. Throat Chakra
The throat chakra influences your ability to speak and embody your inner truth. Blockages here may make it difficult to speak up for yourself, or even feel fear of judgment from others.
6. Third-Eye Chakra
Located between your eyebrows, you may have heard this space referred to as the center of your intuition. Spiritually, the third-eye chakra serves as the bridge between yourSelf (yes, with a capital S) and the outside world. A blockage here may influence not only your intuition but also your ability to recall facts or acquire new skills.
7. Crown Chakra
Considered the center of enlightenment and connection to the spiritual self and the divine, this chakra is located at the crown of the head. Feelings of isolation or disconnection can result from a blocked crown chakra.
Energy blockages and imbalances can create physical, mental, and emotional “dis-ease”. By aligning and activating key areas in your chakras, you can give your body, mind, and spirit a revitalizing overhaul.
