Level 1 vs Level 2 Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training: Your Path to RYT 500
Is it time to take your passion for yoga to the next level? All of our instructors started with a single yoga class that grew into a love for their practice that they wanted to share with others. If that sounds like you, read on to find out about Uptown Yoga’s simple, two-level pathway to becoming a certified Vinyasa yoga teacher.
Your journey begins with level 1 yoga teacher training, also known as RYT 200. This 200-hour program is the foundation every aspiring yoga teacher must complete before taking their practice and their teaching deeper into level 2. This guide walks you through the two levels and tells you what to expect from your
Yoga Teacher Training with Uptown Yoga.
What is Level 1 - 200-Hour RYT Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training?
Let’s start by taking a closer look at the acronyms. RYT stands for ‘registered yoga teacher’. It’s the first level of training recognized by the Yoga Alliance, the largest non-profit membership and trade organization for yoga professionals in the U.S. The alliance’s credentials have become the standard for yoga instructors worldwide.
RYT 200, or level 1, is the first level of training any aspiring registered yoga teacher completes. This program is more than just a course: it initiates your journey into sharing the gift of yoga. Whether you would like to pass on your passion to friends and family, want to deepen your own practice, or are looking for a career change, this is the starting point.
Level 1 Vinyasa yoga teacher training allows you to grow as a practitioner and a teacher of yoga, and you can start right here with us this fall. As a graduate, you earn the RYT 200 registration and are qualified to teach yoga classes professionally.
What to Expect from Your RYT 200 Class
Your RYT 200 class with Uptown Yoga covers the foundational pillars of Vinyasa yoga: we will cover asanas, basic anatomy as it applies to yoga, history and philosophy of yoga, pranayama, and core teaching methodology.
All you need to bring is your love of the practice and a commitment to growth. Teaching experience in another area is certainly useful, but it’s not a requirement. From August to November, you’ll be spending weekends with our experienced instructors at Uptown Yoga to help you deepen your understanding of asanas and sequencing and give you a chance to assist in your first classes.
Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to progress your own practice by attending
unlimited classes on training dates. We’ll also meet on Zoom to discuss the theoretical foundations of yoga, introduce you to Ayurveda, and consider the business side of yoga. There is plenty of flexibility, too, and any missed classes can be made up through online assignments.
What is the Level 2 - 300-Hour RYT Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training?
Level 2 picks up where Level 1 left off. This advanced program is open exclusively to graduates of the RYT 200 class. Over the course of 300 hours, this program guides you toward reaching the coveted RYT 500 certification, the highest level of Yoga Alliance certification for registered teachers.
Through this program, you’ll deepen your expertise in Vinyasa yoga. You’ll learn more about advanced asanas, sequencing yoga classes, anatomy, meditation, and philosophy. We also cover more specialized areas such as therapeutic yoga, advanced pranayama, and teaching multi-level Vinyasa classes. As a result, you’ll be able to tailor your teaching even better to your individual students, whether it’s in front of a classroom or privately.
Understanding the Pathway of Yoga Teacher Training: Level 1 First, Then Level 2
Becoming a yoga teacher is an intentional journey, and both levels of teacher training are essential parts of that. Unlike most of our classes for practitioners of yoga, which you can choose freely, our Vinyasa yoga teacher training follows a required schedule of progression. You have to complete level 1 before moving on to level 2.
Completing level 1 is a prerequisite for level 2, because it lays the foundation on which we build during the advanced teacher training. This structured approach helps you build genuine competency in yoga teaching before advancing to specialized, in-depth training.
Level 1 gives you a solid grounding in Vinyasa fundamentals. It established your readiness to teach, which is reflected in your RYT 200 credentials. Level 2 then adds advanced teaching skills. The second level goes significantly further into subjects like yoga philosophy, sequencing your practice, understanding anatomy, and translating all of this knowledge into more specialized applications of Vinyasa yoga.
Level 1 allows you to start, while level 2 shapes you into an expert, making you a more confident instructor. The combined 500-hour journey truly builds well-rounded, highly skilled Vinyasa yoga teachers.
Who Should Enroll and When?
If you’re passionate about Vinyasa yoga and would like to build your teaching foundation, enroll in our level 1 class at Uptown Yoga today. Going through the training will help you grow as a practitioner and give you the tools you need to start sharing your passion.
Progress to level 2 when you’re ready to deepen your knowledge and refine your skills. There is no need to start level 1 with an immediate commitment to RYT 500. Consider your long-term goals, but keep an open mind and allow your teaching ability to grow as you expand your knowledge, assist experienced instructors, and start to develop your own style.
Remember, there are plenty of opportunities to teach professionally, perhaps specialize in Vinyasa, or grow within your yoga community as you discover other styles of practice. Enrolling in a level 1 RYT 200 yoga teacher training class is simply the first step on your teaching journey.
